A proposed North Jersey casino expansion plan into the Garden State is receiving growing resistance from over the Hudson. Two separate promotions were launched this week, one from the casino employees union, as well as the other a Genting New York City casino. Both marketing efforts will aim at persuading their neighbors on the other hand of the George Washington Bridge to vote from the proposal.
President for the nyc Hotel and Motel Trades Council Peter Ward (left) says that Trenton political bosses are up to their ‘old games’ in reference to New Jersey casino expansion. Ward is seen here speaking to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
In March, the New Jersey legislature voted overwhelmingly in benefit of a bill which will allow voters to decide on November 8 whether to break Atlantic City’s longstanding monopoly on casino gaming.
The North Jersey proposal would create two casino licenses for projects close to New York’s border, with the expectation that it will attract legions of casino-goers from the Big Apple’s metropolitan area, bolstering New Jersey’s sagging video gaming economy.
Certain New York lawmakers are aghast at the proposal, which is in direct opposition to their upstate casino that is own expansion. The Empire State licensed three new region that is northern this year under the proviso that none could be built downstate for seven years.
But now, facing a potential edge war in the south, ny is considering tearing up that agreement to warn New Jersey voters off the referendum.
Union City Blues
Wading into the fray is the nyc Hotel and Motel Trades Council (HTC), which represents workers in nyc, in addition to around 5,000 hospitality workers in New Jersey. HTC, which is under the AFL-CIO federation of labor unions umbrella, is starting a TV and digital ad campaign contrary to the proposal. Its focus? That the current North Jersey casino expansion referendum excludes a ‘labor peace’ supply, one factor that could limit union organizing efforts.
‘Our union has generated a powerful standard for video gaming workers in the tristate area, and we will oppose any efforts to expand gaming into North Jersey,’ said HTC union President Peter Ward until we have concrete assurances that those standards will be met.
‘Trenton political bosses are up to their old games,’ proclaims the ad, which suggests politicians will use the new casino revenue however they wish, ‘just like they did once they bailed away Donald Trump’s failing casinos.’
Trenton’s Bad Bet
Meanwhile, Malaysian casino operating giant Genting, which owns a slots parlor in the New York City borough of Queens, has bankrolled an advertising campaign contrary to the proposal for a group called Trenton’s Bad Bet, which is made up heavily of Atlantic City gambling enterprises that oppose the referendum.
While expansion promises to provide straight back compensation $200 million per year to the close-to-bankrupt Atlantic City, many operators and voters in the resort city are skeptical. Supporters of the payout declare that taxes on the North Jersey new casinos will protect it.
The resort town has lost a quarter of its casinos within the last three years, plus the announcement of this imminent closure of the Trump Taj Mahal in mid-October is driving anxiety that expansion will be the death knell for the town. Other people believe the Atlantic City sector happens to be rightsized, and can deal with some extra competition, while hopefully attracting footfall to nj-new Jersey from neighboring states.
Anti-Gambling Groups May Sue New York to Repeal New DFS Law
Les Bernal, national director regarding the organization ‘Stop Predatory Gambling’ believes that New York’s DFS regulations could be unconstitutional. (Image: video.foxbusiness.com)
New York and Massachusetts this thirty days became the seventh and eighth states to regulate daily fantasy sports, correspondingly. But in New York this week the backlash came, as anti-gambling groups emerged to voice their displeasure and consider their options that are legal.
Many believe that in order to legalize DFS ‘by the guide,’ the State of New York needs to have amended its constitution. But alternatively, the legislature merely passed an amendment declaring the contests become games of skill, and so exempt from its gambling laws.
Les Bernal, nationwide manager of Washington, DC-based Stop Predatory Gambling, told the Buffalo News that he is considering suing to have the law changed.
‘There is no solitary work of brand new York State government that creates more inequality of opportunity than its sponsorship of predatory gambling,’ said Bernal. ‘And now what state government is attempting to do is force predatory gambling into every home and cell phone in the state because of a push by extremely effective gambling passions.’
Constitutional Challenge Remains
Final week it was revealed that DFS market-leaders DraftKings and FanDuel had spent around $800,000 on lobbying for their cause in nyc since last autumn, at half that is least of that within the two months ahead of the signing of this bill.
But Bernal’s point ignores the fact that many ‘powerful gambling interests’ actually opposed New York’s DFS bill, including the New York Gaming Association, which advocates for the passions associated with the state’s nine racetrack casinos. It also ignores the fact DFS had a big groundswell of grassroots support in the state from thousands and thousands of customers.
According to the Buffalo News, Florida attorney Daniel Wallach told a small grouping of gambling industry attorneys and professionals at a meeting week that is last a constitutional challenge could set DFS back in brand New York by two years. He noted that Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has recently announced the games to be unconstitutional, although the AG has said he’ll uphold the law that is new.
‘Anyone investing in these businesses should certainly keep their arms within their pockets for the long run,’ threatened Bernal, although he could not state for sure that his organization, or others, will be able launch a legal challenge.
Massachusetts’ ‘Deeper Dive’
Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, lawmakers said this week that their work to regulate DFS had only just started. The state has adopted regulations drawn up in November 2015 by its attorney general, Maura Healey, however the law that is new establishes a nine-person payment that will be looking at creating myfreepokies.com a more robust framework of legislation, which can include licensing and taxation.
‘ We have dealt with the presssing problem of legality here in the short-term,’ stated Representative Joseph Wagner, co-chairman of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. ‘But I think there has been a feeling in the legislature in each branch that individuals wish to take a deeper dive on this.’
Gambling Industry Approaching Saturation in Northeast United States

The gambling industry in the northeast area associated with the united states of america was confined to Atlantic City for decades. Initial legal advertisement casino opened into the nj-new Jersey beachfront city back in 1978, and until the early 1990s Atlantic City largely enjoyed a monopoly on gambling regarding the East Coast.
The US Supreme Court ruled in 1987 that federally recognized Indian tribes have the right to self-regulate casino games perhaps not barred by state legislation. The ruling effectively ended Atlantic City’s stronghold.
By 1996, half of the 50 states had some kind of land-based video gaming. Today, analysts are worried the expansion that is continued northeastern states will quickly induce market saturation.
‘The market in New England is continuing to grow,’ video gaming analyst Clyde Barrow told the Associated Press this week. ‘But there will be a saturation point.’
The All-Mighty Slot
Massachusetts’ Plainridge Park Casino slot parlor opened in June 2015, and their state will welcome the $950 million MGM Springfield in 2018 and $1.7 billion Wynn Boston Harbor in 2019. New York’s slots-only racetrack parlor Resorts World Casino near JFK airport terminal is considering expansion, and two upstate casinos are expected to open in 2017.
In northeast Pennsylvania, Sands Bethlehem controls the market over Mount Airy Casino Resort. The Philadelphia area is home to four gambling enterprises with a fifth possibly on the way in which.
Rhode Island has the Twin River Casino, and then there’s Connecticut’s Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun resorts. The Mashantucket Pequot, Mohegan, and Mashpee tribes are all seeking to build additional casinos near the Connecticut-Massachusetts border to compete with MGM and Wynn.
And don’t forget that place called Atlantic City where seven casinos will remain after the Trump Taj Mahal closes in October.
The northeast is the most region that is densely populated the United States, but it is becoming flooded with gambling destinations. For now, however, the market seems to support the casino that is numerous.
Gambling saturation is mostly tested through slots revenue as the devices still create the most income for operators.
According to Fitch Ratings, casino businesses want and need each slot to win $200 per 24 hours. Anything below that number might signal a market that is oversaturated.
In Mohegan Sun’s 5,110 slots won $297 each day june. Foxwood’s 4,451 machines took in $260.
Plainridge Park’s 1,250 slots collected over $370 day-to-day in July, its best monthly performance in 2016.
Even though the gaming economy remains strong in the northeast, ‘saturation’ remains a constant concern.
‘I try not to use the word. No sense cursing the darkness,’ Foxwoods CEO Felix Rappaport told the AP.
MGM and Wynn are two of the most experienced gaming operatives in the industry. Their significant investments in Massachusetts reveal their particular research supports additional casino facilities in the northeast.
But unlike some venues in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, MGM Springfield and Wynn Boston Harbor is going to be concentrating as much on the entertainment and resort aspect as gambling. For instance, Wynn’s harbor stroll will come with the resort’s high-end shopping and feature four upscale restaurants.
Gambling revenue now plays fiddle that is second Las Vegas to nongaming activities. Regional resorts are expected to follow along with the trend and adapt to advertise conditions.
Mohegan Sun is celebrating its 20th anniversary in October with a comedy gala featuring Kevin Hart and Sarah Silverman, and will welcome numerous A-list performers including Tim McGraw, Bruno Mars, KISS, and Carrie Underwood.
Rogue Trading Sites Put up Shell Businesses in Scotland

Unregulated options that are binary sites, of which customers can lose thousands making high-risk fixed odds-bets on monetary areas, are increasingly being set up in Scotland as shell companies, according to an expose by Scottish newspaper The Herald.
The rogue sites are exploiting a hundred-year-old loophole in the law that allows foreign companies to establish themselves in Scotland, as Scottish Limited Partnerships (SLP), as a tax avoidance scheme despite strict financial and gambling regulations in the UK.
SPLs, unlike their south that is equivalent of border, require no financial reports to be submitted if they do no business in britain. The Scottish Law Commission, as well as the Law Commission of England and Wales, has argued that this means they are popular with international criminal organizations and has demanded that the loophole be closed.
While SPLs have existed since before World War One, their incorporation has more than doubled since 2009 when businesses based in traditional tax havens realized the loophole could help them to pay no tax, or close to no tax, whatsoever.
According to The Herald, since 2009 SLPs are widely marketed in Eastern Europe as being zero-tax havens for ‘offshore companies.’ The magazine has previously exposed SLPs as being shells for organized criminal organizations, including an arms exporter running weapons from the previous Soviet Union to the center East.
The Herald this week found three binary options websites using the loophole to circumvent UK Gambling Commission licensing. Finpari, Barclays Traders and Solution-Capital were all recently blacklisted by the French economic regulator, AMF, which warned that it might not find any authorized investment services provider for the sites.
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority issued a formal warning on such unlicensed businesses this month. ‘Unfortunately, lots of the reports we have received come from consumers who’ve dealt with fraudulent binary options firms that have no status that is regulatory with the FCA, Gambling Commission or other EEA or non-EEA regulators,’ it stated.
‘Many consumers describe having lost substantial sums of money. While this may be expected given the risk that is high or lose nature of the task, we’re particularly concerned about the experiences many consumers report to us when attempting to manage unauthorized or unlicensed binary options firms.
‘We regularly read about such organizations unexpectedly shutting consumers’ trading accounts, refusing to pay back their funds and ceasing any more experience of the consumer.’
The Scottish Government last week formally asked the UK Government to close the controversial loophole.
